It’s that time of year when we start projects and look forward to the summer. That is why it is the perfect time for some de-cluttering and sorting. When is the last time you cleared out your underwear drawer? Do you have knickers and bras stuffed in there for years that you know you won’t wear because they are uncomfortable, grey, old or just don’t fit right?
With knickers it is obvious when they need to be retired, but a bra is more difficult. How long you keep your bra depends on how well you have looked after it. Ones that have been worn and washed many times will start to show wear and will not be as supportive as they once were. How do you know when it is time to bin that bra? Look out for cups that are stretched out, straps that are loose, fabric that is breaking down such as small hair like elastics showing or anything that makes it uncomfortable to wear.
Your bra gives you support for comfort, but it also gives you a lovely shape for your clothes. This in turn gives you confidence as you know you will look your best. An old misshapen bra will do you no favours.
Take everything out and wipe down the inside of the drawer. Spread all the contents over the bed so you can see them clearly. Go through everything and if you have not worn it in a year it does not return to the drawer. Any bras or knickers that are worn, mishappen, the wrong size, uncomfortable are not returning either. Organise what you have left by type and return to the drawer in an order to suit you, perhaps consider drawer dividers.
Wait, don’t throw that old bra away, donate it to the clothing pods you see in your locality. They will not be worn again but the fabric and metal will be recycled. Imagine, your old bra could end up as house insulation or furniture stuffing.
The sense of achievement in a small task like this cannot be underestimated. For something that will take you about 30-40 minutes, it will bring you a little buzz of happiness. Plus, now you have an excuse to go shopping for new things!
